Kalmansi lemonade

Hi friends and family!

After a hard day at work Alex headed home on the scooter. The relaxing ocean breeze was only complimented by the mound of kalamansi fruits that had fallen next to our house. Kalamansi are the babies that clementines and lemons once had.

Squeezing them and deseeding them took a good 10 minutes but was totally worth it!

Even the geckos from outside wanted in!

Add some water and sugar and you have the perfect summer drink! Or whatever season you want on Guam really. For an adult version feel free to add some gin :)

Join us next time for a tutorial on how to make soursop smoothies!

Osaka, day 1 Japan!

Friends and Family,

Kombanwa (good evening), Sarah and I have arrived in Osaka and after a day of exploring around the city we decided to have a night of dinner in our room which is a small room with mats on the floor :). It is called a tatami style room but, we love it!

The only way we can describe Japan so far is clean, efficient and COOL! Everything is hilarious here, especially the advertisements.

And the tshirt designs...

And the public safety signs...

And the system to check your umbrella at a restaurant...

Sorry it has been so long since our last post, we have been working on a movie/slides how of our Philippines trip which should be up in mid August. For now, we will give updates from the road in Japan!

Fish, Cook, Eat!

This blog will guide you on the journey of how food fishes of the Mariana Islands end up on the plates of some very hungry people!

This t-shirt says it all...  (but we did add some extra steps).

Step 1:  Spear fish.

Step 2:  Pose for picture with new catch.

Step 3:  Place in cooler, preferably on opposite side of cold drinks.

Step 4:  Take in the beautiful view.

Step 5:  Head home with a cooler full of fish.

Step 6:  Do some extra trolling, just in case there are any Great Barracuda following you in.

Step 7:  Take out all of the gross parts.

Step 8:  Prepare fish (grill, fry, bake, or all of the above).

Step 9:  Eat!!!!  Num numm NUMMM!!!

We are heading to the Philippines today!!!  We are flying to Manila for a night and then on to Palawan for a week.  We will report back with some new adventures!  Thanks for reading...

Ocean wildlife!

Hello!  More updates from Guam!  This is a random collection of pictures--mostly of Alex in between catching fish and admiring other wild creatures in Guam!

Game face!

Parrot fish seized!

Pretty dolphins!!

In the safety of our kitchen, we play with the body parts of the intimidating Sling Jaw Wrasse!

The coconut crab has a deadly grip!

Hashing and the Flat People!

Sorry it has been over a month since we last blogged!  Like many of you, we have been keeping busy!  I finished my first year of grad school and Alex has been working nonstop!  I also finally got my nursing license here...now I'm waiting to hear back from jobs.  Got out of one line to wait in another ;)  Oh well, in due time I too will be contributing to society again (probably working for the man).

Even with our busy schedules, we have been taking full advantage of our time off!  Below is Alex and I running through the Guam jungle partaking in the "Hash run."  For those of you who have never heard of this event, it is not a new concept.  Wikipedia would tell you this:

"Hashing originated in December 1938 in Kuala Lumpur, then in the Federated Malay States (now Malaysia), when a group of British colonial officers and expatriates began meeting on Monday evenings to run, in a fashion patterned after the traditional British Paper Chase or 'Hare and Hounds,' to rid themselves of the excesses of the previous weekend."

Guam "hashers" pride themselves on being a part of the "Mother hash of Micronesia" and running through the unmatched jungle terrain of Guam.  The run is done around 5pm.  As the Hares set the trail, the hashers try to follow the markings and intentional mis-markings, as to not get lost before the sun sets.   It all ends with a bonfire, a session of dirty songs and inappropriate banter, and of course drinking cheap light beer.  Despite making me feel like I joined a fraternity, I love running in new areas of Guam with a group of people and ending the evening with a few cold drinks!

Here is Guam's hash website:

There is often a lot of wading and swimming through water...

And climbing of waterfalls!

We have been getting a lot of diving in recently!  And we did get our advanced certification.  That included a dive to 100 feet, a night dive, underwater navigation, fish identification, and other types of diving techniques.

Alex discovers his natural talent for the ocean air base guitar!

Was there a pearl in there??

The dive company MDA takes boats out to different dive sites almost every day of the week.

Alex and his coworkers!  And wait....what is that in Alex's hand?

Or should I say "who?"  The Flat People!!

Our nieces, Lisi and Isabella sent us the Flat People all the way from Iowa!  So we gave them a tour of Alex's work place.

Of course we didn't miss the Spam aisle!

We hit the beach and picked up a couple souvenir t-shirts!

Why do the days in Guam always end so perfectly?

Check back this week for a couple more posts!  Then next week we will be heading to the Philippines for a week vacation.  I have a feeling we will have a lot to share from that trip!
