On Day 3 of our honeymoon we decided to be a little touristy and check out the Polynesian Culture Center... it was only a few minutes away from our resort. Even though it was a little pricey it was pretty unique in that every person there was on a student scholarship from the island that they represented... making it actually authentic. The whole place was pretty much attached to BYU Hawaii so each student on this scholarship also had to be mormon, which we found a little odd.
Before we got there we grabbed some food at a local cafe. Sarah got the tempura mahi mahi and I had grilled ahi. Great meal... and about $5 a plate!
After this we headed over to the Polynesian Culture Center... not quite sure what we were about to get.
It started off with each country introducing themselves on a canoe like object with dancing... pretty cool actually. Most were very good dancers.
Some a little intimidating (this is a girl from the Maori tribes of New Zealand)...
However, after the show she taught us some of her native games which turned out to be a lot of fun and only needed to have a stick involved.
After this we participated in a little competition with probably 20 other tourists in a game of lawn darts or something of the sort (except with a stick). Sarah won it all of course.
After this we toured around the cultural center exploring the different "islands" of polynesia but mostly just taking in the nature. It is a really well designed area... maybe more for younger kids but we found a way to enjoy it.
We took a couple shots of each other too...
Later this night was a luau dinner followed by a really incredible show that consisted of fire poi, music and some sweet dancing... we would recommend just going to see the show :)
More to come,
Alex and Sarah V
